The Power of Our Words

Our ability to think and express ourselves in words is one of the most powerful “tools” we possess. There are two types of words: the silent words used for inner dialogue and the spoken words used for communication. The problem often arises, when we forget that the words uttered in the privacy of our own mind, are responsible for the quality of the spoken words. If we want to have a successful life, our focus must be on developing congruence between our inner and outer voice.
If you are familiar with the expression “head space” you can imagine your mind as a house, filled with the furniture you like. The furniture represent your thoughts and “head space” is your conscious awareness, where your inner dialogue takes place.
Look around, do you like what you see? Are you comfortable or do you feel cramped, with no space to breathe? If so, remember that you have the power to rearrange the furniture and discard of those outdated, thoughts which have no purpose, except to make you feel bad.
In the past you might have tried to change, but without much success. As the result, you may have concluded that you cannot do it, and that you will forever be cramped into that small space. Would you give up so quickly if it were your real house? Probably not. You would instead redecorate it or clear out the clutter. So why not do the same for your “head space.” Why not throw out the “not” words and replace them with the belief that you ARE good enough, smart enough, loveable enough, thin enough, etc.?
Make sure that those beliefs serve you. Remember you can “edit” your thoughts the same way you edit your home’s accessories or your wardrobe.
If you are not careful, it so easy to say ‘Yeah, but” even when you know it is unhealthy. You might want to believe that since nobody can hear you in there, you have the right to say anything you want: good things, bad things, even offensive things. After all it is your secret, and lucky you, nobody will ever find out.
So, do you want to become happy or miserable? The choice is yours. Your mind does not know the difference between what is real or imagined, it will accept whatever words you feed it, and will affect your self-esteem.
What if, you replaced those “can’t” words with “can’s”, what if you felt worthy of great things happening to you? What if you said every morning, I am happy to be me and you welcomed the world of infinite possibilities?” Try it, you have nothing to lose!
So remember the power of your words, both in conversations with others as well as in your conversations with yourself! And watch to see what happens when you change your words be remodeling them into positive, life giving words.
